Shami replaces injured Bumrah for T20 World Cup
Mohammed Shami has been named as Jasprit Bumrah's replacement for the upcoming T20 World Cup to be played in Australia, a BCCI media release confirmed on Friday (October 14).
Shami, who made his T20I debut against Pakistan in Mirpur in March 2014, has picked up 18 wickets in 17 matches at an average of over 31. He recorded his best T20I figures of 3 for 15 against Scotland in 2021. He has also taken 99 wickets in the IPL at an average of just over 29. He was also India's second highest wicket-taker (17 wickets at 17.29) in the 50-over World Cup played in Australia in 2015.
Bumrah was ruled out of the T20 World Cup in Australia with a back injury after a detailed assessment and in consultation with the specialists. The fast bowler had returned ahead of the T20Is against Australia after being sidelined for over two months since suffering back problems at the
end of the England tour in July.
However, after playing two T20Is versus Australia, Bumrah couldn't partake in the final T20I and the subsequent limited overs series against South Africa due to persistent back problems.
India will start their 2022 World Cup campaign with a match against Pakistan at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on October 22.
India squad for ICC T20 World Cup: Rohit Sharma (Captain), KL Rahul (vice-captain), Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Deepak Hooda, Rishabh Pant (wicket-keeper), Dinesh Karthik (wicket-keeper), Hardik Pandya, R.
